“Beyond the Mountain - E ”

“Beyond the Mountain”シリーズは、1枚の版木を何度も彫って刷る「彫り進め」という木版画技法を用いて制作された連作です。
AからFまで、同じ版木を彫り進めながら生まれる6つの異なる作品には、山から人物へと変化していく姿が刻まれています。
A[別ページ参照]では山の風景が広がっていますが、彫りが進むにつれ、本作のEではその山の陰影が女性のポニーテールや耳へと形を変えて現れます。
山を彫りながらその先の女性の像も意識しつつ作り、女性の版へと彫り進める時には失われていく山の面影を想う、という特別な制作工程がこのシリーズにはあります。
「山は越えるもの」と考えていた作家が、やがて「山もまた自分の一部だった」と気づいた――
そんな思いをかたちにした、静かで力強いシリーズです。


⚪︎作家プロフィール
北村早紀 | KITAMURA Saki
主に人物や山をモチーフに、版表現をルーツとした作品を制作。近年は日本の土着的・民俗的な信仰に関心が強く、常世信仰・山中他界観をベースとした作品コンセプトを展開する。2023年以降、古写真に映る社会的な記号を失った被写体を「無重力的人物像」として着目し、自身が撮影した山中・山上での写真とを合成し、さらにその上に「不在の存在」としての木版表現を重ねることで、生命が持つ境界の曖昧さや相対性、時間や存在のゆらぎに意識を置く自身の版表現との融合を試みている。
国内外での作品発表のほか、静岡県熱海市ATAMI BAY RESORT新館のフロア常設アート、SHIPSのアートコラボTシャツ企画へのアートワーク提供なども行っている。

“Beyond the Mountain - E ”

“Beyond the Mountain” series is a collection of woodblock prints created using a technique called horisusume (progressive carving), in which a single woodblock is carved and printed multiple times. From version A to F, six different works emerge from the same block, gradually transforming from a mountain landscape into a human figure.
In this piece (A) [see separate page], we see a serene mountainous scene. As the carving progresses, the image shifts—by version E, the shadows of the mountain become a woman's ponytail and the shape of her ear.
This unique process—carving the mountain while envisioning the woman to come, and remembering the lost image of the mountain while carving the woman—lies at the heart of this series.
The artist once saw mountains as barriers—something to be crossed. But over time, she came to see them as integral to her identity. This quiet yet powerful series gives form to that realization.

Artist Profile
Saki Kitamura | 北村早紀
Saki Kitamura creates works rooted in printmaking, often featuring mountains and human figures.
In recent years, her focus has turned to Japanese indigenous and folk beliefs, developing concepts based on Tokoyo (eternal world) beliefs and views of the afterlife in the mountains.
Since 2023, she has been working with vintage photographs depicting figures stripped of societal identifiers—what she calls “gravity-free portraits.” These are digitally combined with photographs she takes in the mountains, layered with woodblock prints representing “absent presences.” Her practice explores the ambiguity and relativity of life’s boundaries, and the fluctuation of time and being.
In addition to exhibiting her work in Japan and abroad, she has contributed permanent art for the new wing of ATAMI BAY RESORT (Shizuoka), and artwork for collaborative T-shirt projects with SHIPS.
